This overlook is easily accessible from either downtown Roanoke or the Blue Ridge Parkway. Parking is located nearby but you will have to walk to up a short paved path to the overlook in front of The Star. The overlook and star are located atop Mill Mountain, which afford you a wonderful view of downtown Roanoke and the surrounding area. The park closes at 9:00 p.m.
The Roanoke (Mill Mountain) Star was built first illuminated on November 23, 1949 and gave Roanoke, Virginia the nickname “The Star City of the South.” The Star was built at a cost of $28,000 and stands 88.5 feet tall, weighs 10,000 pounds and is 1,847 feet above sea level and 1,045 feet above the city of Roanoke.
