The Fruit Stand is a whimsical tribute to Kelowna’s agricultural history. There are seven concrete and terrazzo fruit forms: apples, pears and peaches, some whole, others sliced. Under the fruit forms are five benches, accompanied by mosaics of vintage fruit box labels from the 1930s and 1940s. The Fruit Stand, by artists Glen Andersen & T.S. Thomas, was completed in 2002.

The large Pear is made of cast cement which was then smoothed and polished to perfection. The large Pear fruit form makes playful reference to the oversized roadside “folk” art found across North America.

Along the walkway window apertures are located above the bench backrests, subtly conveying the Fruit Stand’s concept. It might be a concession window, a doorway, perhaps even the back of a pick-up truck tailgate down, a lone independent fruit seller on the roadside – the imagination is free to roam.

The colorful apple crate mosaic labels are about 26” high by 30” wide creating an intermittent “stream” of color along the walls. All the tiles are specially imported Byzantine and Venetian glass mosaics.
