KBR Tower -- formerly known as the M. W. Kellogg Tower -- is a 40-story, 550 ft (168 m) tall skyscraper in downtown Houston, Texas. It forms part of the Cullen Center complex which includes the nearby, more modern "1600 Smith Street" skyscraper (formerly called "Continental Center I" when it still housed the Continental Airlines headquarters) and two other smaller office towers on the South side of Jefferson Street.
The tower was built in 1973 by the architectural firm of Neuhaus & Taylor, and was renovated in 1991. Like several other "older" skyscrapers in Houston's downtown business district, it features recessed windows to minimize heat and glare from the relentless Texas sun.
On May 15, 2012, the USGBC awarded the skyscraper a LEED for EB:O&M (v2009) Gold Certification -- with a total score of 61/110. Some of the salient scorecard results included:
* Water Efficiency:
30% reduction in indoor potable water use
* Materials and Resources:
40% sustainable purchasing of furniture
75% reuse or recycle of durable goods
50% sustainable purchasing of facility alterations and additions
90% sustainable purchasing of reduced mercury lamps
70% diversion of waste from facility alteration and additions
* Sustainable Sites:
18% reduction in conventional commuting trips
* Energy and Atmosphere:
85 Energy Star Performance Rating
7.5% or 62.5% onsite renewable energy or offsite renewable energy
* Indoor Environmental Quality:
50% of occupied space has daylighting and quality views
