This prize-winning garden titled A Centenary Garden for Captain R.F. Scott was devised in 2010 to commemorate Captain Scott's failed attempt to be the first to reach the South Pole. He and his crew set off from Cardiff aboard the Terra Nova.

The garden was designed by Mo Dorken and Cardiff Council Parks Service. It won silver medal at the famous Chelsea Flower Show in 2010.
The garden is about 4 meters by 4 meters in size. At the centre is a sculpture reminiscent of a ships mast with a brass plate at the bottom. This is surrounded by twelve stone slabs onto which has been carved a map of Antarctic and the route taken by Terra Nova. Details of the trip are on an inscription at the front of the garden.
The inspiration for this garden is the centenary of Captain Scott’s courageous polar expedition that set sail from Cardiff for the South Pole in June 1910. The spirit of the times is captured in the garden. With formal topiary and box hedging, it reflects the Edwardian affluence of Cardiff’s industrialists and ship owners and their grand houses and gardens surrounding Cardiff bay.
Roath Park in Cardiff has now been chosen as a place to permanently display the garden. It is only 20 meters or so from the Scott Memorial Lighthouse.
I notice that a few things have changed in the garden design from that originally displayed at Chelsea. The replica of the Terra Nova is not on top of the pole at the centre. This is understandable as it would no doubt be vulnerable to vandalism in a municipal park.
