Passersby through the City of Dorris can't help but notice a very tall flagpole with a humungous US Flag waving proudly (most of the time) over town and inviting visitors to stop and visit the small plaza this flagpole resides in. From the Butte Valley Chamber of Commerce website:

Home of America's Tallest Flagpole West of the Mississippi
Butte Valley teams with American and community pride. In June 2, 1996, this small but energetic community, raised a 30 x 60 ft American flag to fly atop a 200 ft - tall flagpole. Located next to Dorris City Hall, America's tallest flagpole West of the Mississippi garners immense interest from travelers and residents alike. A community flag raising and barbecue is held annually on the Fourth of July to honor all Veterans and active military who fight to preserve the freedom we all enjoy.

Whether the claim that the residents of Dorris make is true or not, this flag is very captivating and if you pass through town and see it on a somewhat breezy and sunny day, it's almost mesmerizing the way the flag ruffles in the wind. The flagpole and flag were dedicated to all of America's veterans and a neat tribute to the men and women who've worn the uniform and protected our freedoms in times of war and in times of peace.

Description of Memorial:
The flagpole and flag are located in a small plaza that contains a few monuments and a community commemorative wall celebrating Dorris' incorporation as a town (1908-2008). There is a rust metal sculpture of an eagle taking flight near the flagpole as well as a war memorial monument containing a list of Dorris residents who lost their lives in WWI.
