The bell is mounted on one of the walls of an old warehouse about five metres above ground level. The bell is attached to a large wheel and both are housed under a roof like structure to prevent it from the worst of the weather.
A rope is attached to the rim of the wheel with the other end of the rope being attached to a cleat at ground level. Pulling the rope would rotate the wheel and the bell about 30 degrees. That would be enough for the clapper to sound the bell. Releasing the rope would allow the wheel to rotate the other way and for the bell to sound again. The rope would then be pulled again, and on and on until the alarm was no longer needed.
