Moonbeam is a small community in Northern Ontario, located on Highway 11 just east of Kapuskasing.
Yes, it's an odd name for a community. They say that the pioneers in the area named the community for flashing lights that they witnessed "falling" from the sky, probably Northern Lights. Others say that early railway travelers would refer to the area as Moonbeam because, after hours of traveling through the dark forest the train would emerge at the natural clearing here and those aboard would be amazed at the brightness of the snow in the moonlight.
Both explanations seem contrived; the attraction here probably explains the actual origin of the name Moonbeam.
I have visited Moonbeam a handful of times in my lifetime, always passing through; when writing of YOUR visit to this unique waymark, state the nature of your visit to Moonbeam. A picture of your visit would be AWESOME, it really would.
