This mural of Our Lady of Guadalupe (#18 in
The Murals of Conejos County Driving Tour) is located in the heart of Guadalupe, one of the first settlements of the region. According to lore, the town was founded when a traveler's mule, carrying an image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, refused to move from the spot. Taking it as a sign, the frustrated traveler vowed to build a church on the spot. The satisfied mule then moved on. The church and town were founded in 1851 and named Guadalupe after the saint.
The mural, created by Roger Briones, uses the pointillism technique in which thousands of small dots of color form the larger work (similar to a printing press). It is one of many in the area that comprise the Murals of Conejos County Driving Tour, highlighting art that engages in the "ages-old local tradition of story-telling depicting tales of settlement, folklore, faith, scenic beauty and everyday rural life." A brochure is available at the Antonito and Alamosa chambers of commerce.
