Tellus is a 120,000 square foot museum, named for the Ancient Roman earth goddess - Tellus, that opened January 12, 2009 in the former Weinman Mineral Museum space. The museum is located in Cartersville, GA just off I-75 at exit 293. Tellus features four main galleries: The Weinman Mineral Gallery, The Fossil Gallery, Science in Motion and The Collins Family My Big Backyard. A 120-seat digital planetarium and an astronomical observatory with a state-of-the-art 20-inch telescope and a seismograph is also located at Tellus.
There are many exciting exhibits like an 80 foot-long Apatosaurus and a replica Wright flyer to amaze visitors of all ages. Children have fun conducting hands-on experiments with light, sound, rainbows, mirrors, magnets and more. Gems and minerals lay buried in the sand waiting to be discovered in interactive exhibits. Tellus also houses a Foucault Pendulum to demonstrate how the Earth moves. It takes 3-4 hours to tour the museum. The observatory is open to the public for special events, check the website for schedule of times.
