Crown Hill Cemetery was dedicated on June 1, 1864 with Lucy Ann Seaton becoming the first person buried here on June 2, 1864. With a total area of 555 acres, Crown Hill is the 3rd largest non-government cemetery in the United States. Within its boundaries there over 25-miles of paved roads. Currently there are over 1,500 burials each year and are well over 200,000 grave in this cemetery. The Grave of James Whitcomb Riley sits at the highest point not only in the cemetery but in Indianapolis. Visitors are afforded a grand view of the Indianapolis Skyline from this vantage point. Crown Hill features a number of notable interments including, the 23rd President of the United States, Benjamin Harrison, Gangster John Dillinger, three Vice Presidents, Eleven Indiana Governors, 16-Civil War Generals and 14-United States Senators.
