Description:
Joseph Hooker was born in Hadley, Massachusetts on November 13, 1814. He attended the United States Military Academy in West Point, graduating 29th out of a class of 50 in 1837. Immediately after graduation he served in the Seminole War and the Mexican-American War before resigning his commission in 1853 to pursue land development and politic in California. When the Civil War broke out Hooker returned to the Army with the rank of Brigadier General. He was wounded at Antietam but recovered and following the Union Defeat at Fredericksburg he was given command of the Army of the Potomac. Despite detailed planning Hooker was soundly defeated at Chancellorsville. After Chancellorsville, Hooker was relieved of Command by President Abraham Lincoln. Hooker Next saw action in Tennessee helping the Union achieve an important victory at Lookout Mountain. After leaving Georgia, he commanded the Northern Department and was headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio where he remained until the end of the war. While in Ohio he married Olivia Groesbeck, who was the sister of Congressman William Groesbeck. As the war ended, Hooker led the funeral possession of President Abraham Lincoln in Springfield, Illinois on Mary 4, 1865. Following the war, Hooker suffered from poor health and died in Garden City, New York on October 31, 1879. General Joseph Hooker is buried in Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio.
