Plains United Presbyterian Church - Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania
Plains Presbyterian Church was created in 1806, and started by having services in a tent, followed by a "log" church. Plains was "yoked" with the Crestview Presbyterian Church in nearby Callery until the early 1970's. The current church was built in 1879 with a basement, which included modern plumbing added in 1970. A second floor was added to the church in 1956, formerly containing classrooms. In 1968, a soundproof room was added to the rear of the church for mothers and their young children, as well as the fire escape from the second floor of the sanctuary. In 1969, the yoke was dissolved, meaning that Plains Church then had to construct a new Manse for their new pastor, which was completed in the summer of 1971 and cost $22,059.87 to construct.
With a growing church school enrollment, it became evident that additional space was needed for educational purposes. On June 23, 1974 ground was broken for an educational unit adjacent to the church. Beaver-Butler Presbytery gave evidence of their faith in the future of Plains Church by giving the church a grant of $10,000 plus an additional loan of $10,000 toward
the cost of construction. Dedication of the building was celebrated during homecoming weekend on October 23, 1977. The new building contains a church office, pastor’s study, four large
classrooms and rest rooms on the first floor, with a new kitchen, large fellowship hall with fireplace, three small rooms, and rest rooms on the ground floor.
In 1990, a $70,000.00 renovation/restoration to the sanctuary took place, removing the second floor classrooms, but creating a new balcony, which increased the seating capacity to 180.
