Lovejoy has been house sitting for Freddy the Phone, who is in exile in Spain. The bailiffs arrive and repossess Freddy’s house, and Lovejoy’s car and stock as well. Lovejoy is left on his uppers and goes along to a local old folks home, with Tinker and Eric, to buy a commode that a late resident has left. He buys the commode, with its Napoleonic emblem, and works on selling it.
The commode is minus its liner, so Lovejoy persuades a local artist to make a new liner for it. Next he gets a forger to forge a letter from the garrison commander on Elba, giving the commode provenance. Finally, Lady Jane invites a Napoleon expert, Monsieur Brogni, to authenticate the piece. Brogni gives the commode his seal of approval. Unfortunately the commode has become too rare and very expensive. Monsieur Brogni cannot afford the piece, but gives Lovejoy a signed card for authentication purposes. Freddy the Phone reappears in England and Lovejoy gets him to buy the commode at a price that compensates Lovejoy for the loss of his stock.
