Eric is using Lady Jane’s Range Rover to collect antiques. He leaves the tailgate open and two burglars drop stolen antiques in the back. A policewoman alerts her colleagues and Eric is stopped and arrested. Lovejoy’s fingerprints are on the stolen antiques, because he did a valuation for the owner. The owner and Lady Jane are out of town and it is some time before Eric is released.

Meanwhile, Lovejoy is asked to value some Jewish religuous artefacts for a Wing Commander Connaught. Connaught claims that his late wife collected the items from Leeds, but has no bill of sale. Lovejoy arranges for Mr Solomon to come to view the articles, which spooks Connaught. Connaught tries to get Charlie Gimbert to sell the items privately, but Lovejoy finds out and takes the collection from Gimbert’s house.

Mr Solomon identifies the items as having come out of the Warsaw ghetto and asks for their return. Connaught had been a con man in post war Europe and appropriated the artefacts there. Solomon will return them to where they belong. Lovejoy gets a commission from Solomon and Lady Jane gets decorating contacts from the Jewish community. Charlie Gimbert gets nothing.

Eric manages to find the two robbers and follows them to a churchyard. They are stashing their loot in a grave in the churchyard. He alerts the police and they are caught and Eric exonerated.
