Ostrava Main Station, located in Ostrava' district Prívoz, belongs among the busiest transport hubs in the Ostrava City and whole region. The first, oldest part of the station, was opened for trains in year 1847. From that time it was many times rebuilt, connected with another railway corridors and also enlarged...
Since 2005 Ostrava is served by the Pendolino, the Czech Republic’s high speed passenger train system. There are 6 trains daily in each direction, lasting roughly 3 hours, and are scheduled in coordination with Czech Airlines flights from Prague. Last years here also operate two independent Czech private railway companies - LEO Express and Student Agency, both sending their trains from Ostrava to Prague and back.
The present hall of the station, built between 1967-1973, was designed in Brussels '58 Expo style and belongs among valuable examples of this modern architectural style. Especially well designed is roof (in the shape of triangular star with central circular opening) covering public space prior the hall and protecting passengers waiting for trams and trolleybuses of Ostrava city transport.
