From the short history on the Kanuga website (secondary link below) and a nearby marker, we learn that this retreat area was built in 1905 with the services of nationally known landscape designer John Nolen and noted Asheville architect Richard Sharp Smith. In 1928, the dioceses of the two Carolinas purchased the Kanuga Lake Club. Over the years, the Episcopal church has created a wonderful conference center and camp areas to give respire and inspiration for believers.
The coordinates are for the NRHP plaque located near the chapel.
