The building was constructed between 1933-34 as Great Depression construction project. It was built to serve as the main post office for Nashville and was located near Union Station as most mail at the time was moved by railroads. The Art Deco styled building was designed by Marr & Holman Architects. The three-story building is sheathed in stone. In 1986 a new modern main post office was built and the building was used as the the downtown branch post office using only a portion of one floor. In the 1990s a joint venture between the Frist Foundation, the City of Nashville and the US Postal Service to convert the building into an art museum with a branch post office in the basement. The post office moved into a newly renovated branch post office in the basement in 1999. The Frist Center for the Visual Arts opened in 2001.
