The Christ Church parish dates to June 1829 and was the first Episcopal parish in Nashville. The cornerstone for their first church was laid in 1830. During the Civil War Christ Church was one of the few churches in Nashville which was not taken over for military use. The parish has shown steady growth over the years. Construction of the present church began in 1889, the cornerstone was laid in 1892 and the church was completed in 1894 with its first service December 16, 1894. The Victorian Gothic style church was designed by New York architect Francis Hatch Kimball. The church is constructed of sandstone with cut stone trim. The tower was added to the church in 1947 and was designed local architect Russell E. Hart. The church interior features extensive carved woodwork and beautiful stained glass.
In 1995 Christ Church was selected to become the Cathedral of the Episcopal Diocese of Tennessee and became the Cathedral officially in 1997.
The church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
