An iron structure has been placed across from the Hawthorne Bridge in Portland, and is actually a sculpture commissioned by the city of Portland in conjuction with the expansion of the east side streetcar project. It is funded by the "2% for Art" ordinance, where 2% of publicly-funded capital construction projects is set aside and used for public art.
The sculpture has been controversial. Some love it, some hate it, with comments against the artwork indicating that at least some of the public feels the iron structures are an attractive nuisance and will entice youth to climb it or birds to decorate it. Others wonder why this piece of "art" was placed here since it is not historically accurate (it does not look anything like the building that used to be here).
The sculpture was created by two Seattle artists, Annie Han (who graduated from David Douglas High School in Portland) and Daniel Mihalyo. Both artists are alumni of the University of Oregon's School of Architecture and Allied Arts. The piece has the title " Inversion: Plus Minus".
