The sign is shield shaped with the Essex arms in the centre and local landmarks and occupations in the four quadrants. In the SE quadrant is the 16th century mystic, Benet Canfield, who was born at Little Canfield Hall. In the NW corner is Little Canfield Mill, demolished in 1930. In the NE quadrant is All Saints Church, and in the SW quadrant is a blacksmith who worked at Church End of the village.
