Long Description:

The Northfield Civil War Monument is usually called simply The Monument. It was sculpted by Nelson Bolles and Julius Glover and dedicated in September 1866.

A 20' by 4' by 4' brownstone obelisk is topped by a sculpted double flame and surrounded by a cast iron fence. The south face of the monument has the inscription:

THAT THE GENERATIONS TO COME
MIGHT KNOW THEM

Below, the name LINCOLN is inscribed in raised capital letters.

Followed by the names of three soldiers killed during the Civil War:

LIEUT. HORACE HUBBARD.
Co. H. 2. C.H.A.
killed Bat. Winchester Va.
Sept. 19. 1864, Æ 33.

HIRAM T. COOLEY.
Co. D. 2.C. C.H.A.
killed Bat. Winchester Va.
Sept. 19 1864, Æ 29.

killed Bat. Fishers Hill Va.
Sept. 22. 1864, Æ 37.

The east face has the names of two soldiers killed during the Civil War:

HENRY M. MINER.
