EN: The Vordere Wartenberg was the largest of the three castles on Wartenberg hill. The castle covers an area of more than 100 to 30 meters. It stands on a rocky outcrop in the north of Wartenberg.

The current structures are of the 13th Century, probably at this location there was a predecessor of the 11th Century. The first documented owner was the Bishopric of Strasbourg. The castles were inhabited as a fief by the Counts of Homberg, after 1250 by von Frohburg. In 1306 the area became the property of the Habsburg, in the mid-14th century Münch von Münchenstein. In 1515 it was sold to Basel, the castle was already given up then and began to fall apart.

In the first half of the 20th Century the three castles were restored in unscientific manner which destroyed many historical findings.

DE: Die Vordere Wartenberg war die grösste der drei Burgen auf dem Wartenberg. Die Burg hat eine Ausdehnung von über 100 auf 30 Metern. Sie steht auf einem Felssporn im Norden des Wartenbergs.

Die heutige Ruine stammt aus dem 13. Jahrhundert, vermutlich gab es an dieser Stelle einen Vorgängerbau aus dem 11. Jahrhundert. Der erste dokumentierte Besitzer ist das Hochstift Strassburg. Die Burgen wurden als Lehen von den Grafen von Homberg bewohnt, ab 1250 von Frohburg. 1306 kam die Gegend in den Besitz von Habsburg, mitte Jahrhundert zu Münch von Münchenstein. 1515 wurde sie an Basel verkauft, da war die Burg aber schon aufgegeben und begann zu zerfallen.

In der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts wurden die drei Burgen auf unwissenschaftliche Weise restauriert, was viele historische befunde vernichtete.
