General Ulysses S. Grant - St. Louis, MO - Smithsonian Art Inventory Sculptures on Waymarking.com

This statue of Ulysses S. Grant stands on a large stone plinth, situated on the northeast corner of Washington Square, which surrounds City Hall. He is depicted as during his days as General of the Union Army. The Art Inventories Catalog describes the statue as follows:

"Standing figure of Ulysses S. Grant in full uniform. He holds a sword in his proper left hand, and binoculars in his proper right hand. He stands with his proper left leg forward. A plaque on the front of the base depicts the Battle of Lookout Mountain.

Figure: approx. 9 ft. 6 in. x 2 ft. 4 in. x 2 ft. 4 in.; Base: approx. 9 ft. 2 in. x 6 ft. 7 in. x 6 ft. 7 in." (visit link)

Apparently, this statue has been moved a couple times since being unveiled to the public in 1888. "The monument was first installed in the middle of Twelfth Street in 1888, awaiting completion of the construction of City Hall. When City Hall was completed in 1898, the sculpture was moved to the south entrance of City Hall, where it was placed with a Civil War cannon. In response to criticism of the backdoor location of the monument, the sculpture was moved in 1915 to its present site, without the cannon." (visit link)
