Built in January 1896 at the Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia, this C-18 "Consolidation" locomotive is a living postcard of the golden age of steam railways. The engine began service in the mining towns along the Florence & Cripple Creek Railroad. In 1917, the Denver & Rio Grande Western R.R. purchased the engine for $2000. Initially numbered 428, it was later changed to 318 and hauled passengers and freight out of Salida, Durango and Montrose.
In 1954 Cornelius W. Hauck acquired the locomotive and put it on display with his Narrow Gauge Museum in Alamosa. In 1958 the museum moved to its present site in Golden and No. 318 operated under steam until 1982. In 2011 the engine was restored for display although it is no longer in operational condition.
