With the North County Transit District Coaster Commuter trains, Amtrak passenger trains, plus lots of freight traffic you only have to wait a few minutes to see some kind of railroading activity at this location. The tracks are below grade in a "ditch" to eliminate interference with street-level traffic, but there is an elevator to make access to track level easy and a pedestrian bridge takes you across the tracks on the upper level so you can watch from either platform. This station is in downtown Solana Beach so there are lots of locations to obtain food or beverages to help satisfy other needs while you watch trains There are restrooms in the station so you can easily relieve any pressures that may arise if you watch trains for too long.
The Coaster runs 11 trains each way on weekdays and 4 each way on weekends. Amtrak operates 12 trains each way on weekdays and 11 each way on weekends. Only the Coaster trains stop at this location.
While freight traffic is unscheduled, this is the only mainline freight corridor serving San Diego so there is occasional freight traffic interspersed with the passenger-oriented trains with most of the freight moving during night hours when there is no interference from passenger movements.
