Der NaturZoo wurde 1937 als als Heimattiergarten gegründet.
1974 wurde im Naturzoo Rheine der erste begehbare Affenwald Deutschlands eröffnet.
Mit etwa 30 Störchen gibt es im Zoo in Rheine die größte Storchenkolonie Nordrhein-Westfalens. Zu diesen Zoostörchen kommt in etwa die gleiche Zahl wilder Störche hinzu, die den Winter im Zoo verbringen.
