This sign of history is located in Corydon, IN at the site of the Constitution Elm. The Constitution Elm is the remains of the elm tree that lawmakers drafted the original Indiana state constitution in 1816. It is a few blocks away from the first state capitol building, before the state government was moved to Indianapolis in 1825.
There are 2 signs located here, the one being waymarked is the smaller sign that is attached to the building covering the tree stump. There is also a photo the other sign that gives even more history of the location.
The sign reads:
"CONSTITUTION ELM
on this spot, beneath the shade of the elm
the
CONSTITUTION OF INDIANA
was framed in
June, 1816
This tree lived until 1925, attaining a height
of 50 feet, a trunk diameter of of five feet
and a spread of of one hundred and thirty-two feet
This monument was erected in 1936"
