The Church of the Holy Trinity was begun in 1849 as a mission church of Christ Church of Nashville. The church became the Holy Trinity Parish in 1852. The construction of the current church building was begun in 1852 with the nave and chancel were completed in 1853. The tower was not completed until 1887 and the building was consecrated in 1888. The building was designed by New York architects Wills and Dudley. The church was modeled after English parish churches in a Gothic Revival style. The parish was organized as a "free" church meaning the church did not charge pew fees. The church originally served the local low to middle class white population of the area.
During the Civil War services were stopped and the church building was used by Federal troops as a stable and powder magazine. The Federal government paid a fee to place damaged property and for use following the war.
Over the years the neighborhood surrounding the church went through transition. In 1907 the church was given to the African American members of the church and it was at that time it became a mission church instead of a parish church. The church membership increased, drawing African American members from across the city along with those from the neighborhood. Holy Trinity saw a decline in membership in the 1970s - 1980s as seen by many churches during that period. Holy Trinity is now again a parish church and is again evolving with its neighborhood though its membership remain predominately African-American.
