Junction Mills were built in 1867 and this chimney was sold to the community for one pound in the year 2000.

The chimney originally accompanied a five storey cotton spinning mill built next to the Ashton canal. It has an octagonal shape and is 210 feet high (64 meters). The top of the chimney has an unusual tulip design.
Cotton spinning ceased in 1930 and the building put to other uses, but by 1985 most of the building had been demolished.
The remainder of the building was demolished in 2003 at the same time that a development of apartments was built on the site. It was decided to retain the chimney as a reminder of the history of the site.
A small public park has been built around the chimney and is also accessible by a footpath alongside the canal. There is a plaque on the side of the chimney with a description of its history.
