This high level indicator is on a river gauge attached to a small church in Asselt (near Roermond) close te the river Rhine.
Most time of the year the gauge can easyly be reached by foot, however when the river Rhine gets flooded high boots or a boat is needed.
It indicates extreme high water levels of the river Rhine during the centuries.
Data of extreme high water levels can be read near the level indicater (eg 26-7-1829, 18,9 meters above sea level).
The ordinary water level of the river Rhine at this point is around 16 meters above sea level.
