The original collection can be traced back to some objects that were transferred from the U.S. Patent Office to the Smithsonian. When the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition closed in 1876 after the nation's 100th birthday, many of the artifacts displayed were moved to the U.S. National Museum - now the Arts and Industries Building. Opened in 1964 as the National Museum of History and Technology, today the National Museum of American History houses those collections and more.
Inside you'll find the flag that inspired "The Star Spangled Banner", the flag that flew over the Pentagon after 9/11/01, the original Kermit the Frog, a piece of the Berlin Wall, and Archie Bunker's living room furniture - and much, much more.
