Kroepcke Square is the geographical and commercial center of downtown Hannover, situated near the main railway station and the opera house. It first came into being in 1843, when the old town expanded to the north. In the years of industrialization and rapid growth, it developed to be the busiest place around and it was here that in 1931, Hannover's first traffic lights were installed. The name derives from Café Kroepcke, established on the place at the end of the 19th century. With the years, the name of the café went over to the square, and in 1948 it was declared its official name. With the construction of the underground railways system in the 1970s, all motor traffic was banned from the place and it became the heart of the pedestrians precinct shopping area. Today the place is busy with people as ever and the underground station has become the central focal point of the Stadtbahn railway network.

Der Kröpcke ist das geographische und kommerzielle Zentrum Hannovers im Herzen der Innenstadt, unweit von Hauptbahnhof und Opernhaus. Er entstand als Straßenkreuzung 1843, als sich die alte Stadt nach Norden hin ausdehnte, und entwickelte sich in den folgenden Jahren der Industrialisierung und des explosionsartigen Wachstums zum verkehrsreichsten Platz der Stadt, wo 1931 dann auch Hannovers erste Verkehrsampel aufgestellt wurde. Der Name leitet sich vom Café Kröpcke ab, das hier gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts eröffnet wurde und dessen Name mit der Zeit auf den Platz überging, zunächst im Volksmund und seit 1948 dann auch offiziell. Im Zuge des U-Bahnbaus in den 1970er Jahren wurde aller motorisierte Verkehr vom Platz verbannt und der Kröpcke wurde zum Mittelpunkt der Fußgänger- und Einkaufszone. Heute ist er belebt wie eh und je und die U-Bahnstation ist zum Dreh- und Angelpunkt des Stadtbahnnetzes geworden.
