The date is engraved into a low stone parapet and the engraving also indicates the border between the counties of Lancashire and Cheshire.

The town of Ashton-Under-Lyne in Lancashire lay on the northern bank of the River Tame, and Dukinfield lay on the southern bank in Cheshire. However since the boundary reorganisation of 1974 both towns have both been in the Metropolitan Borough of Tameside within the Metropolitan County of Greater Manchester.

The bridge is close to the end of the Ashton Canal at Whitelands basin that opened in 1796. There has been a bridge at this point since at least 1792 because the preamble to the original Act of Parliament that granted permission for the canal to be built was passed then and it made reference to the bridge.
