UPDATE Mar 6, 2015:
The Bay Lights have been turned off for about a year to allow for cable maintenance and installation of more permanent lights. No visits to the Bay Lights can be made during this time.

Inspired by Leo Villareal’s retrospective at the San Jose Museum of Art, Ben Davis invited the artist to conceive of an artwork for the Bay Bridge and began a campaign to realize The Bay Lights. This ever-changing, dazzling light sculpture will be the world’s largest light sculpture at 1.8 miles wide and 500 feet high. The Bay Lights will be installed and illuminated over the course of the Bay Bridge's 75th Anniversary, which extends from 2011 to 2012.

Facts from The Bay Lights Info Sheet (PDF).

  • The six-month installation began in September 2012. Specially trained riggers worked from 8PM to 5AM attaching the LED light wires to the 300 cables on the bridge, the longest cable being 240 feet.
  • Villareal has created his own proprietary software to get nuanced, three-layer control of the grid – each single pixel is individually addressable, working as a group to create an overall effect.
  • The Bay Lights is a site specific installation. The artist will use patterns of weather, the water and the traffic of cars, ships and wildlife as inspiration for creating his software algorithms. The patterns will never repeat.
  • The LEDs are high efficiency and the power used will be offset by solar credits for the least environmental impact. Only $11,000 per year is allocated to energy cost.
  • Over 100,000 LF of cables (for power), fiber and Cat 5 wires will be used.

NOTE: - Your visit picture must be at night otherwise you did not see the "Bay Lights".
