In a way, this bronze model is located "in the middle of itself": On the Alter Markt square, which is the center of the Bielefeld Altstadt - which is what the model shows. It is a donation given to the city by the Bielefeld branch of Mercedes Benz together with the Bielefelder Bürgerstiftung, a community foundation, and addresses blind people in particular, inviting them to tactually explore the streets and the cityscape they pass every day but cannot see. In accordance with this aim, it shows the town as it is today (or rather was in 2005, when the model was manufactured), and not any historical state of let's say some time in the middle ages. Of course, the model is very popular with seeing people as well, especially with kids. Inscriptions in the model are in both the latin alphabet and braille.

In gewisser Weise steht dieses Bronzemodell "inmitten seiner selbst": Auf dem Alten Markt, dem Zentrum der Bielefelder Altstadt - die wiederum genau das ist, was das Modell darstellt. Es wurde gestiftet von der örtlichen Mercedes Benz Niederlassung mit Unterstützung der Bielefelder Bürgerstiftung und richtet sich insbesondere an Blinde, indem es dazu einlädt, die Umgebung, durch die diese sich täglich bewegen ohne sie sehen zu können, mit den Fingern zu erforschen und somit "begreifbar" zu machen. Diesem Zweck entsprechend gibt das Modell das aktuelle Erscheinungsbild der Stadt wieder (bzw. das von 2005, als es angefertigt wurde) und nicht irgendeinen historischen Zustand, z.B. aus dem Mittelalter. Natürlich ist das Modell aber auch bei Sehenden, insbesondere bei Kindern, sehr beliebt. Alle Inschriften am Modell sind sowohl in lateinischen Buchstaben als auch in Brailleschrift vorgenommen.
