This is an outdoor museum of 30+ historic early Christian churches (9th century)carved into the easily erodable soft volcanic ash rock formations, known as tuff. Visitors can view dining halls, chapels, a nun's convent, a monastary etc. The chapels have amazing frescos. Be sure to pay the extra charge to enter the "Dark Church" to see the painstakingly restored frescos. Also be sure to stop into the nearby Tokali church.
