The same family operated this mill for 200 years, before selling it to the current owners. I visited with the owners and enjoyed hearing the history of the mill.
The original building survived (with additions) until it burned in 1950. A new mill was constructed on the same location, and this is the building which is in use, today. The original wooden dam was replaced with a concrete dam in 1930.
The public is welcome to visit. Product is available for sale. The owners maintain a very informative website with a pictorial history of the mill.
Directions: From US-70 in Clayton, NC, proceed easterly on NC-42 about 14 miles, to mill on left, just past Mary Atkinson Girl Scout Camp and the Little River bridge. From US-64 or US-264, exit onto NC-39, just east of Zebulon, NC. Go south about 11 miles to NC-42. Turn right and go about a half-mile to mill on right, just before the Little River bridge.
