In 1758, the Colonial Legislature approved an act to move the capital of North Carolina to a new city called George City (in honor of King George) at the plantation of Governor Arthur Dobbs.
Land was purchased but the act was never fully carried out and the capital was never built. The land was publicly owned by the colony and then the state of North Carolina until the capital was established at Raleigh, and then the land was sold.
