Though the city of Khon Kaen is of relatively recent vintage (1783) the history of the region of Khon Kaen province stretches back centuries, as the sweep of fate, destiny, empires, kings and pretensions flowed across. Successive kingdoms ruled this area, usually Thai kingdoms, but at one time the Cambodian Empire stretched its tentacles into the lands of the Thai people.
This history is documented in the Khon Kaen branch of the national museum. This museum is found in the city, and contains a wide variety of artefacts, both in the museum itself and in the museum grounds. There is an abundance of signage, in both Thai and English. Entry is 100 baht ($3) for foreigners, and 20 baht for locals. Unusually, I did not see a gift shop. Worth a visit.
