ARoS is a spectacular visual experiences for children and adults, a mental service in which the inquisitive person can be both informed and pleased and challenged. Aarhus Art Museum is the oldest museum collection outside of Copenhagen, established by citizens in Aarhus in 1859.

The architecture is of international class. The same is the art collection. And both offers experiences of a high order: From light to thrill and from attitude to entertainment.

With thousands of square metres spanning ten levels the museum now has ample space to showcase its extensive collection of 1100 paintings, 400 sculptures and installations, 200 art videos and over 7,000 drawings, photos and graphics: a collection that ahead of the inauguration was enhanced by the addition of works by international artists such as Bill Viola, Olafur Eliasson, Ron Mueck, Pipilotti Rist, Tony Oursler, James Turrell, Mona Hatoum, Carsten Höller, Gilbert & George.

The art museum contains three large galleries of just under 1,100 square metres each for permanent exhibitions allowing visitors the opportunity to view a broad spectrum of works from the museum’s own collection. In addition, recent acquisitions of international light and video works are displayed in the basement level of the museum in a special exhibition gallery called 'The 9 Spaces.'

The sculpture "Boy" by the australian artist Ron Mueck, is the symbol of ARoS Aarhus Museum of Art. The five metres tall and 500 kg heavy impressive Boy is crouching in the northern end of the foyer of special exhibitions.

Due to his size and lifelikeness "Boy" is an incredible sight. First shown in London in the Millennium Dome, 2000, and later at Biennalen in Venice, 2001. The latter was the place where the Director of ARoS, Jens Erik Sørensen, fell in love with the magnificent sculpture and, in competition with other museums in Europe, bought it.
