Britannia Buildings in Elland was designed by E W Johnson of Southport for the former Halifax and Huddersfield Bank in 1893. It is an English Heritage
Grade II listed building. Both Halifax and Huddersfield are large towns in Yorkshire near to here that expanded very quickly around this time as their industries grew.
The arms shown here are the coat of arms of the Borough of Halifax.
This
Halifax Town website tells us that
" The name Halifax is said to be a corruption of the old English words for Holy and Face, part of the local legend that the head of John the Baptist was buried here after his execution. The legend is almost certainly mediaeval rather than ancient, though the town's coat of arms still carries an image of the Saint.“
Above the head of St John the Baptist is the word Hales and below it Fax, from one of the old ways of spelling Halifax. The head is on a shield with a chequer board design from the original coat of arms of the Earls Warenne, who held the town during Norman times.
