Volunteers have worked hard over the years to preserve this history of this cathedral, transforming the worship center into a space for live music after the congregation merged with a neighboring Catholic church. The church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 under the name Sacred Heart Cathedral and Cathedral School, but it was renamed in 2005 as the Sacred Heart Cathedral, Sacred Heart School and Christian Brothers. The parish was organized in 1870 and worshipped in a small wooden building which burned down 22 years later. The present Gothic Revival and Craftsman Gothic structure was completed in 1896 and was used until it closed its doors in 1985. The dedicated organist, eager to preserve the building with its original Felgemaker pipe organ, purchased the building from the diocese for $1 and recruited volunteers to transform it into a musical facility. Those attending concerts today can enjoy the magnificent acoustics and the impressive stain glass windows while listening to a wide range of music.
