The waymarked point is the furthest southeast you can get in Texas and still be in the state. Texas does go a bit further southeast, but it is inaccessible marsh.
There are old WWII artillery emplacements here, and ruins of bunkers used for ammo storage. The landscape is much changed after 2005's Hurricane Rita, which came ashore right here, with the strongest winds coming right over Texas Point and nearby Sabine Pass. Old Coast Guard structures were wiped aweay, replaced by new automated beacons.
The end of the Jetty Road is as far southeast as you can go. It's all uphill (and northbound) from here! :)

"Even if people forget that Hurricane Rita made landfall near Sabine Pass, Texas in September of 2005 – and they probably will – history still provides much to remember about this small town that is the southeastern most place in the state of Texas."
