Lovejoy is approached by Major Chatfield to find an artist Ashley Wilkes, ostencibly to get a commission to paint a mural in the officer’s mess. After trying several contacts and antique shops he eventually gets the name of someone who has bought one of his paintings. The owner dismisses Lovejoy, but then cycles off at great speed. Lovejoy follows him to the pub and watches him tell several ladies that Lovejoy is looking for Wilkes. Lovejoy follows one of the ladies home and discovers that nearly everyone has a Wilkes painting.

Knowing that Wilkes runs art classes in Braintree, Tinker is despatched to enrol on one of his courses. Lovejoy, meanwhile catches one of his dealer friends with a married woman, who also has a Wilkes painting. Lovejoy bribes him to find Wilkes. Wilkes is found at a local pub and Lovejoy confronts him. Wilkes agrees to meet the Major at Lovejoy’s house. The Major is not directly interested in Wilkes, but the whereabouts of the major’s wife, Roz. Roz left the major for Wilkes and now runs a farm where Wilkes runs his art classes.

Lovejoy does not want to reveal Roz’s whereabouts, but two secret service agents put pressure on him. Lovejoy delivers Roz to the major. Apparently Roz’s father was involved in a massacre in Malaya, along with another officer, now an important person. The secret service, via the major, want the papers Roz’s father had returned.
