The inscription, carved in granite, is
very difficult to read. The stone is in two halves. The part on the left shows a
coat-of-arms with the wording "Metropolitan / Borough of Chelsea". The
part to the right has carved at the top "Erected 1906-8". Beneath that
there are further inscribed words that are very hard to decipher.
The building is Grade II listed and the
entry at the English Heritage website [visit
link] tells us:
"Town hall. 1906-8. Leonard Stokes,
architect. Red brick and stone. Granite plinth. Slate roof. Two storeys, 15
windows wide. 3 bays to each end, pedimented, with stone facing. Roman Ionic
columns in antis. Entrances. Between, red brick with stone architraves, aprons
and cornices. Ground floor segmental heads to windows. Square-headed above.
Central bellcote with split pediment and large elaborate dado projecting
beneath."
The building is now used as an
entertainment venue.
