The public zoo of Bern "Tierpark Dählhölzli" is located in a small forest at the bank of the river Aare in the south of the city.
The first plans for a zoo in Bern dated back to 1871, but it could not be accomplished until 1937. In the beginning it had a focus on domestic wildlife, but in the following years also a number of exotic animals were added. Currently the zoo is slowly restructured according the new slogan "more space for less animals".
The zoo also has a restaurant and a souvenir shop that are outside the area where you have pay an entrance fee; also the enclosures along the river (deer, ibex, boar, beaver) are accessible free of charge.
