"In later Carboniferous Age (about 300 million years ago) swamp forests were growing in Central Europe, populated by giant sigillaria, horsetails and fern-like plants. The marshy ground of these woodlands was later covered by sedimentary strata of argil and sand. Finally, after millions of years, hermetically sealed under high pressure and temperature, these layers developed to bituminous (black) coal. The originally horizontal strata then became folded to anticlines and synclines. The outcrop Geologische Wand Kampmannbrücke is located amidst the Bochum Main Syncline, it clearly shows the structure of folds with three coal beds embedded into strata of Ruhr sandstone."
