As with almost all small town museums, this museum deals with its history, its social life and its people. A small budget operation, they have done an admirable job, given their resources. The museum is co-located, across the street from a local landmark, the very photogenic Salmo Hotel, in a building with the Chamber of Commerce and the Library, on the corner of Highway 6 and Fourth Street.

Its exhibits include the day-to-day paraphernalia of home, business and commerce, as it was 80 to 100 years ago. Given that Salmo's prosperity once hinged upon the fortunes of The Emerald Mine and other, smaller nearby gold-lead-zinc-copper mines, there are, as well, exhibits dealing with local mining operations. Included is an exhibit of local ores and rocks. Forestry is an important contributor to the local economy as well, so that is touched upon to the extent that room allows.

The museum presently exhibits a number of reproductions of early photos of the community, the railroad, mining and logging in the area. As this is an ongoing labour of love of a number of volunteers, they are continually adding photos and artefacts as time and finances allow.

The entrance to the museum is through the Chamber of Commerce, which is also Salmo's Visitor Centre. The open hours are essentially the same as the Chamber in the winter, which is 10:00 to 3:00 Monday to Thursday. Hours for the upcoming summer have not as yet been finalized. Cost is as yet by donation, but please be generous, as they have a very small budget.

The Salmo Arts and Museum Society was established in 1970 and administers the Salmo Museum. The museum acquires archival material relating to Salmo and area, including Ymir, Sheep Creek, Pend d'Oreille, and Erie. The holdings include maps, reference books, business records, miscellaneous documents and photographs related to the mining history of Ymir, Sheep Creek, Pend d'Oreille, Erie and miscellaneous mines, community newspapers, manuscripts, scrapbooks, photographs, minute books and ephemera relating to businesses, people and community activities in Salmo and satellite communities.

The museum is located at the corner of Fourth Street & Railway Avenue and maintains the following hours: June-October: Daily, 10:00-16:00. November-May: Monday/Wednesday, 18:00-21:00, Tuesday, 14:00-17:00, Friday, 10:00-16:30. Call in advance to schedule a visit at 250.357.2200
