Built in 1956, this two storey building has undergone a few incarnations as home for various businesses through its early years, but has been the home of Salmo Foods for several decades now.
At an age of 56 years, the building is a relative newcomer to the scene, as the town of Salmo is over twice as old. Built of concrete block on a concrete foundation, it is a very substantial and sturdy building. The front doorway is inset and the lower floor has windows the full width of the building. The upper floor contains apartments.
The "date stone" on this building is a round steel plate, about 1 foot in diameter, set in the concrete step of the front doorway, with raised lettering created by beads of arc welding and incorporates azimuth letters(NSEW) on the perimeter.
Salmo foods is a very popular food store among the locals for four reasons. The management and employees are all very amiable and personable people, they have a butcher shop on site, they have plentiful stocks of fresh produce, bulk foods and natural and organic foods, and then there are the airplanes.
Hanging from the ceiling of the store are dozens of Remote Controlled, flying model aircraft. They were all built by the father of the present owner (obviously a man with way too much time on his hands), and are, we're told, a small portion of his collection.
