Born in 1880 in Estonia, Alexander Zuckerberg moved to Canada about 1923 and to Castlegar in 1930. He initially leased the island and built his home there, then bought what became known as Zuckerberg Island on August 6th, 1951. The house is a very interesting building, with strong Russian architectural influence. The house and outbuildings have been restored by the Castlegar Rotary Club as a heritage building and the entire island is now a park administered by The Castlegar and District Heritage Society.
From a biography at website below:
"Zuckerberg led in many public petitions. He encouraged people to petition for better water mains, improved road conditions, to oppose capital punishment, and to support other citizen’s rights. He was called upon at ratepayers meetings and PTA gatherings to give advice on many issues. His words were always careful, measured, and deserving of attention. The Bloomer Creek outfall and the question of water rights were constant causes for battle. He played an important role in settling the gas pipeline controversy."
See: http://www.stationmuseum.ca/zuckerberg/ for more information.
Alexander spent many hours at wood carving and many of his carvings lined the pathways on the island. Stump Woman, an unusual sculpture of a seated woman carved from a stump is one of Zuckerberg’s best known works.
Alexander and his second wife, Alicia, are buried on the island.
